Jerry Seinfeld, Microsoft, & the Orpheum 18 September 2008 at 3:38 pm by 2,785 views

What is the deal with Stand Up Comics?  Do they really have to stand up?  Does this somehow help the jokes they are telling?  What if they get tired and have to sit down?  And why don’t they just sit down anyway?  It seems it’d make them more comfortable, I mean, you don’t have to stand up to watch.  What if they break an ankle… do they have to take time off, or do they have to bill themselves as a temporarily-sitting comic?  I’d bet that’s their worst nightmare… I mean, who wants to see a comic in a cast?  “Well, I was planning on going out to see my favorite stand up comedian, and I heard he has to be in a wheelchair.  I’m sorry, but unless he’s standing the jokes just don’t work for me.”  Stand up comics… huh.

So, I’m off to see Jerry Seinfeld tonight at the Orpheum theatre in Omaha… I’m totally excited!  I can now add Jerry Seinfeld to my list of “Comics I’ve Always Wanted to See Live.”  So far that list contains Lewis Black and George Carlin.  After Seinfeld I dunno who else is on the list… I’d have to think about it.

Speaking of Jerry, did you get a chance to view his Microsoft commercials?  If not, you’d best get to watching because as of today, they’ve halted the campaign:

Microsoft is expected to announce Thursday that it will be suspending its ad campaign featuring Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates and veteran comedy superstar Jerry Seinfeld.

Valleywag broke the news Wednesday, and Microsoft spokesperson Frank Shaw told the LA Times that the move was planned, despite the appearance that the company is reacting to negative reaction to the ads.

According to Mr. Shaw, the Seinfeld portion of the campaign, for which he was reportedly paid some US$10 million, was always intended to be just an introduction for the overall campaign — a two commercial introduction for $10 million.

“All along we said we were having a teaser campaign,” he told the LA Times. “We’re getting ready to start the second phase. This was the plan all along.”

Here is the first commercial:

And the second:

Sad that there won’t be more, but at least we got to enjoy it while it lasted.

Well, I have to go… I need to ponder peanuts on airplanes and why they have that little slot for razors (who is shaving on a plane?!).

+ Vandals! By 11 September 2008 at 6:35 pm 852 views No Comments

Multiple apartments in our area (including at least 4 in our building) had their locks superglued so the families couldn’t get in.  Right now I’m listening to one of the repairmen trying to drill through the lock of the people who live across from us (close call for us).

This really sucks… I tell you, each year this place gets worse and worse.  Did I mention the dripping roof is back?  Yeah, so much for it being fixed.  The bright side is we finally have a new head manager and lead repair man this month, so maybe things will start getting taken care of.

Can you believe the guy has worn through 2 drill bits trying to get through our neighbor’s door?  He says it’s as if they used an entire tube of glue.  We really need cameras in the hallways (and outer doors that actually lock like they’re supposed to), methinks.

+ Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma By 10 September 2008 at 8:12 am 718 views No Comments

Last Thursday (Sept 4th), my mom was told that there’s a good chance she has Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma.  She hasn’t seen a specialist yet, and there’s a chance she doesn’t, but looking at the pathology report, it seems more likely than not (as you can see here):

This isn’t the best news one could get, but on the brightside it’s not the worst cancer there is.  Right now we’re all taking it day by day, as we still need to get more information (she has a follow up appt later this month).  What we do know is that the surgery she had three years ago for a mass in her leg and an enlarged Thymus gland seems to have been precursors to this and should have been caught then.

At this point we’re all doing all the research we can on this disease, so if anyone out there has gone through it and has some advice, feel free to comment!

+ Back from Colorado! By 07 July 2008 at 9:26 pm 516 views 1 Comment

We’re back from Colorado… the view from Mount Elbert was great (before you ask, no, we didn’t quite make it to the top, but that’s a different post):

More to come later!

+ Apparently all purses are not created equal. By 07 July 2008 at 9:05 am 286 views No Comments

I guess I’m just behind the times, or perhaps as a man I just don’t understand, but why in the world do some purses cost $150, $300, or even thousands of dollars?  To me, there doesn’t seem to be a major difference between a $150 Coach purse and a $25 Worthington Signature purse.  I can almost hear the anger at that statement, but I really don’t get it.  As a guy, if one item costs more than another similar item, in my mind, it does for one of three reasons:

  1. Performance:  The item is better than other items in its class.
  2. Luxury:  The item is made of better materials than other items in its class.
  3. Features:  The item can do more things than other items in its class

That’s it.  You see why these purses have me confused now, right?  And yes, I’ve heard that these purses are more luxurious, but I don’t see it.  Honestly… the materials are the same as other purses, the designs are very similar, and they don’t have any added features that other purses don’t seem to have.  I’ve been told it’s a “Status” thing, or that you’re paying because it’s a “Coach bag” or a “Louis Vuitton bag,” but again… I don’t get it.  Maybe someone can explain it better to me in terms I’d understand (I’m the type  of guy who has a Creative Zen because for the price it had the same quality and more/better features than the iPod).

I guess as long as people are happy to get them and it doesn’t cause any harm, there’s nothing wrong with it, but as someone who has just been introduced to these bags (Jessica is now in love with them) I just don’t get what is so awesome about them.
