Webcam + Fishtank = ?? By Jason 04 January 2006 at 11:49 am 43 views

Let’s talk webcams… combined, Jess and I have 5 webcams. Why so many? Well after buying our own, we somehow got a bunch of free ones. They used to be used a lot, since Jess and I didn’t live together, but now that we do, they’re rarely on. So I had a thought… why not make a streaming webcam of my fishtank (and if that doesn’t work, maybe an image that updates every 5-10 seconds or so)? I figure it would be a nice addition to the rest of the site, but I have never set one up before.

So, what to do? Well, I’ve downloaded YawCam… it seems to have all the features I need to pull this off. Next I need to setup my cam (just on my desk) and see if I can get it to work. I figure I’ll use my nice Logitech to do this. If it works, the next step (pending approval from Jess) is setting up the cam on the fishtank somewhere, and finally, putting an active link here on the site.

So… would you guys tune into Fishies Gone Wild? Drop a comment, let me know what you think!

Well, I’ve been playing around, and I’ve been able to get my webcam to stream onto WordPress (that wasn’t as easy as it sounds), so I’m 50% done! Next step is getting the cam setup at the tank. That will be the interesting part.

Not sure yet… having minor troubles. It seems that the progam I’m using has issues with the type of camera I have. After so long it “freezes” and I have to restart the proggy to keep the video going. There are a few fixes that I’m trying… I’d love to get it setup this weekend, actually. :D
