Good news all around! 31 May 2008 at 9:49 am by Jason 548 views

This isn’t going to be a huge post, but I have some good news (hooray!)…

First: All tests have finally come back and everything shows me as being cancer-free, so I can finally go back on my medicine! Today is my third day back on, and while I don’t feel that much better, I know that in the coming weeks I’ll go back to being normal! Such a relief… who’d think such a little pill was so important?

Second: They have finally fixed our roof! That’s right! No more drips, no more leaks! They’ve also begun patching the ceiling up as well:

Roof Fixed!

It only took a couple years, but at least that is finally fixed! Whoo-hoo, indeed!

Third: I has a pepper… I has a pepper! My pepper plant has started fruiting! Take a look:

Baby Pepper!

I’ll have a post later showing my garden, as for the most part all the plants have taken off. For those wanting to know, yes, you can transplant from an AeroGarden to normal soil quite well (again, I’ll save that for another post).

Fourth: Happy Birthday, Dad! Today marks the 25th Anniversary of your 21st Birthday! I hope you get what you want (although I already know about your new motorcycle, so you’re probably all good).

Okay… that’s all I got for today… I’m going to attempt to get Jessica tickets to the New Kids on the Block concert (what is this, 1988?) as they go on sale for the Omaha show in about 10 minutes. Man… people need to stop touring. I need a break! ha!

+ It’s just never-ending! By Jason 21 May 2008 at 4:55 pm 451 views No Comments

New info. Went through the scan today, the Radiology dept was confused why I’d be scheduled again, but if the doc says do it, they do it. Keep in mind it usually works like:

  1. Take 5 milicurries of I131
  2. Wait a week
  3. Get a scan.

I did this last week, and while the results were good, the doc wanted me to do it again, only this time he ordered me to take a larger dose of radiation (159 milicurries) to burn off any thyroid tissue that the blood work (not the scan) showed may still be in my body. That’s over 30x the amount of radiation I’d normally have prior to doing a scan (not counting any leftover from the original 5). So, I did what he asked:

  1. I took 159 milicurries of I131
  2. Waited a week
  3. Got a scan (today).

Guess what? I get home and there is a message to call the Radiology department.  So I give a call and what did they tell me?  Well, I still have so much radiation in my body, they can’t see anything clearly on the scan. That’s right… today was worthless, so they need me to wait another week for it to clear out some more to see if they can get a clearer pic. Sigh. My day went from “Thank God, it’s over!” to “Wonderful, another week (at least) off my meds.”  Oh, did I mention they’re doing construction on the hospital and with 2 min left of my scan the power cut out?  Yeah, had to do it twice today because they have no backup generator or UPS in that department yet.

It started with 27 days off. As of today I’ve been off 36, and now by the next scan it’ll have been 42. What happens if the scan still isn’t clear? If you guessed “wait another week,” then ding ding ding, we have a winner… at least according to the tech I talked to (she suggested I call my doc, but all of them are out today, so I have to call tomorrow).  Seriously, I’m just so upset.  :(

Okay, that’s all for now… I’m so over this.  The constant taking days off (bye, bye, vacation time!  I didn’t need you!), the feeling like crap, everything.  I’m just over it.  The new Indiana Jones movie comes out tonight, and I bought tickets way in advance to the midnight showing and now since I’ve been off my meds for so long (and because I have to go in to work tomorrow) I’m not sure if I should attempt to go.  Argh!  We even are now talking about the trip to Denver we’ve had planned for months because at this rate I will have only been on my meds for a few weeks.  Hell, Jess has already had to alter whatever she had planned for my birthday because of all this nonsense.

Okay, I need to end this post because I’m too “ranty” right now and I need to figure out what I’m going to do tonight.  Ugh!

+ Does Hillary lead in Delegates? By Jason 11 March 2008 at 3:13 pm 382 views No Comments

The short answer is “no”. Well, not in this universe, but that seems only to be because of the way Democrats have “split” the delegates, rather than have the “winner-take-all” system of the Republicans. A lot of people probably assume that Obama would be still winning had the Democrats used that system, but they’d be wrong. According to Electoral Vote, it looks like the only way Hillary isn’t currently winning is due to the fact that there isn’t a “winner-take-all” system in place. To quote the data:

Quite a few people have asked what would have happened if the Democrats had used a statewide winner-take-all rule. In other words, suppose the statewide winner got all the delegates. Where would be be now? Here is the answer. The calculation assumes Clinton won Nevada and Texas. She got more votes in Nevada but fewer delegates (by 1). She also won the popular vote in the Texas primary.

Hillary Clinton would have 1726 delegates to Barack Obama’s 1533. The reason the Democrats don’t have a winner-take-all rule is because they are Democrats. They don’t consider it fair that the birthday boy or girl gets to eat the whole cake. You have to share it with your friends. Republicans have a different world model. You either win or you lose. If you win you get to take all the marbles home. If you lose, you get no marbles. Try harder next time. If the Democrats had employed winner take all but for only 80% of the delegates leaving 20% for the PLEOs, the score now would be Clinton 1381, Obama 1226.

So there you have it… Obama should be counting his lucky stars that the Democrats don’t have a winner-take-all rule. The other interesting thing about this number is that Florida and Michigan aren’t included, so it shows Hillary would be ahead even without the help of those two states. I wonder if this will change anyone’s opinion on the whole race, or will maybe just be seen as an interesting fact.

+ Jess is stylin’! By Jason 09 March 2008 at 5:43 pm 405 views No Comments

As part of Jessica’s “birthday weekend” she decided to get her hair cut, styled, and colored. The issue is that the place that she normally goes to (Xenon in Omaha) was booked solid. The solution? We went to a different stylist and had her hair cut and styled… then she let me attempt to color it (she decided to have no part in it)! Here’s what it looked like before (a couple weeks ago):

Jessica's hair - Before

Now, after two boxes of color, plenty of cursing, and just a bit of trying to work with crossed fingers, here is the end result:

Jessica's hair - After 1

Jessica's hair - After 2

Not bad! In fact, I think it’s a pretty damn good job, myself. Maybe workin’ for a beauty company is starting to rub off some! ;)
