Cobwebs are everywhere! 09 June 2009 at 10:13 am by Jason 853 views

I need to post more in here… time to blow off some of the dust.

So, what has been keeping me busy?  Well, earlier this year I finished my new “food blog” which I talked about here.  It’s really great… I’m spending 90% of my time over there, so please go check it out:

Food Geekery: Real Food. Real Geek.

I even gave it its own Facebook fan page (go be a fan… I’d appreciate it):

Food Geekery on Facebook

So what does this mean for FlishFun.com?  Nothing.  Don’t worry, I’ll still be around to postmy randomness… more updates will be on the food side of things (as it is my new hobby), but I still need a place to put my political, technical and other random posts, so don’t you worry.  Just be sure to head over to Food Geekery and look around the place!  :)

+ Has it really been two months? By Jason 05 February 2009 at 12:51 pm 1,115 views 1 Comment

Wow… has it really almost been two months since my last Blog post? Yikes… I need to keep more up to date on these things!  Things have been quite busy over the past two months, such as:

  • I went to Florida to visit my family for 2 weeks.
  • I started studying for my next certification (if all goes well, I’ll take the Security+ exam this month).
  • I’ve suddenly been swamped with outside contracting work so I’m out of the house more.
  • I’ve joined a gym (holy crap!  Who’d have thought I’d ever do that?!).
  • I’ve begun cooking even more than before, so I may need to put a PC in the kitchen here soon.

See, so I have plenty of excuses to not have posted anything for awhile.  Oh yeah, did I mention we officially have a new President?  Man… last time I posted we still had Ol’ Whatshisface in office.   As I mentioned, I have started cooking a lot more than before, so as I spoke about in my last post, I am working on a new “food blog” for me to share recipes, review shows/foods/restaurants and all those type things as I continue down this new path I seem to making towards becoming a true “foodie” (scary, I know).  Once this goes live I’ll both mention it here and most likely cross-post when things intersect (as I’m sure they will).

Well, that’s all for now… Valentine’s Day is coming up, so between that and my exam I may be kind of silent again, but I hope to be back blogging away here soon!  Oh yeah, and since I failed to mention it before, I’ve upgraded to WordPress 2.7 “Coltrane” (Final), and it works just awesomely!

+ Still alive! By Jason 09 December 2008 at 6:51 am 1,422 views 2 Comments

I’m still alive, just busy is all.  It’s that time of year when Jess is working 80 hour weeks (no exaggeration) so I’m staying pretty busy just trying to cook/clean/work/etc while she’s gone.  One of the big things I’ve been spending my time doing is cooking/baking and I was thinking about making a second blog… this one being normal, and the other a “food blog” of sorts.  I figure it will be used to share recipes, talk about whatever cooking shows/tips/etc I come across, restaurant reviews, and other stuff like that.  I’ve begun designing it in the little spare time I have:

I don’t think it’s that bad for a start.  My goal is to launch it in early January and see where it goes from there.  Also, on that same note, I think I’ll update this site design a little bit.  I liked it at first, but I really am thinking it needs a slight overhaul.  We’ll see if/when I find the time to do that.  Busy, busy, busy!

Oh, and on a completely different subject, this blog is now running WordPress 2.7 RC1!  There are some slight visual changes between the beta and the release candidate, but I like ‘em!  Go check it out for yourself!!

+ Updated to WordPress 2.6.2 By Jason 11 September 2008 at 6:51 pm 1,364 views No Comments

Updated to WordPress 2.6.2… seems there’s a big issue with previous versions:

Stefan Esser recently warned developers of the dangers of SQL Column Truncation and the weakness of mt_rand().  With his help we worked around these problems and are now releasing WordPress 2.6.2.  If you allow open registration on your blog, you should definitely upgrade.  With open registration enabled, it is possible in WordPress versions 2.6.1 and earlier to craft a username such that it will allow resetting another user’s password to a randomly generated password.  The randomly generated password is not disclosed to the attacker, so this problem by itself is annoying but not a security exploit.  However, this attack coupled with a weakness in the random number seeding in mt_rand() could be used to predict the randomly generated password.  Stefan Esser will release details of the complete attack shortly.  The attack is difficult to accomplish,  but its mere possibility means we recommend upgrading to 2.6.2.

Other PHP apps are susceptible to this class of attack.  To protect all of your apps, grab the latest version of Suhosin.  If you’ve already updated Suhosin, your existing WordPress install is already protected from the full exploit.  You should still upgrade to 2.6.2 if you allow open user registration so as to prevent the possibility of passwords being randomized.
