Programmer/Analyst? 12 April 2006 at 7:57 am by Jason 136 views

So, it seems I found work (temporarily) as a “Programmer/Analyst”… which is odd, as I don’t code. At all. I know pretty much just HTML and BASIC, that’s it. So why are they paying me? Well, I think they were convinced to hire me on by my old bosses.

It seems my old manager and the current president of what is left of my old job are bestest friends with one of the owners at a company here in town. They were looking for some VB .Net and SQL coders. From what I can tell, my bosses went to lunch with the owner, and told him that he needs to hire me.

That day I got an interview, so I went out with my resume to find out what they needed (I had no idea at the time). I sat down with the owner who told me about the company and what they do… the standard stuff. He also mentioned that they’re looking for coders, which I told him I wasn’t. Then he got his IT Manager to come talk with me. He sat down, looked at my resume and asked me about my experience with coding. I told him I had no real coding experience. He sat for a minute, then asked me if I could write If / Then Statements… and I said I could. Well, that was all he needed to hear. He told me all coding is simple and if you know things like If / Then and what a Variable is, you can code in any language. He then pulled out an already prepared job offer that had my old salary on it and told me they were offering me the job. He said not to worry, I could handle it… no real coding.

Cut to Monday… I show up and am told my title is “Programmer/Analyst”, and he sends over another coder to show me around. After our little tour, he starts talking about all the programs he has made in VB6 and in .Net, etc. He then tells me I can feel free to convert all of the VB6 proggys to .Net, etc. I’m then told to install VB6, VB .Net 2003 and VB .Net 2005. I was in shock… I told the Owner and the Manager that I have no experience in coding… why am I here, and why am I being told to code??

I schedule a meeting with the IT Manager and once again explain I’m not a coder and tell him he’d be better off hiring someone else for this project (it’s a 3 month long project, hence it’s a temp job). He looks at me and tells me I’ll be fine, etc etc. For some reason they all want me here to do a job I keep telling them I can’t do. Don’t get me wrong… I’d love to learn how to code, but they’re paying me to help the team make a new backend software with reports to replace what they currently use. Yeah… can’t really do that.

Oh well… I guess if they don’t want to listen, I can’t make them listen. I’m convinced (since I’ve heard from both of my old bosses) that I’m only here because they’re probably worried they’ll be upsetting my old bosses if they let me go. I guess I’ll just let them continue to pay me until they finally listen to me. :s

+ Law & Order: Missing Persons Squad By Jason 24 February 2006 at 11:18 pm 141 views 1 Comment

On Feb 20, 2006, the President of our company went missing. He was last heard from at 6:20 PM talking to his wife. On the 21st, he was discovered dead. I blogged all the events that happened on the Neowin Forums, but it was quite disjointed.

Now that everything is said and done, I figured I should post it here. I’m going to post edited versions of what was posted on the other site. It will be edited to remove things that do not have to do with this, and also to include anything that is missing.

Since this is a very long entry, I’m going to make it split… if you want to read it… please click the “(more)” link below.

+ Less sick, more post! By Jason 10 January 2006 at 11:37 am 34 views No Comments

Well, I’m back to my old self again (mostly)… being sick sucks.

So what’s new? Did everyone remember to patch their Windows? Well, for those who haven’t, click here to get the patch for the Windows Meta File security update.

Have you all checked out the Streaming Fish Cam yet? It needs some tweaking (I’ll see about moving it slightly), but all in all, it’s pretty great! For those wondering, the cam was placed there because that’s where most of the fish seem to gather. I know there’s a rock taking up part of the side, but that’s where the glass catfish live and you won’t see them otherwise (they don’t come out much). :P

Let’s see… oh! I’ve updated the sidebar of the blog, it now has a bit more descriptive text, and a picture of the fishcam for that section (it updates itself when you refresh, every 12 seconds or so). Just thought it would look a bit nicer like that. :)

Okay, that’s all for now… I’d write more, but I got me some new software to play with (purchased by my boss to update our old virtual tours)! Maybe I’ll have a 360 view of something interesting in one of my next posts. ;)

+ Free Stuff Day!!! By Jason 30 December 2005 at 11:16 am 141 views 1 Comment

Whoo!! Today was Cleaning Day at work, and I got a bunch of odd things to bring home. First of all (since I’m sure you don’t work with me), Cleaning Day is the one day each year we can dress casual and essentially spend the day cleaning our work areas. Well, my boss is the third IT manager to be in his office and finally decided to clean it all out and I was handed any software he planned on getting rid of. While most of it was pointless things like Gateway Driver CDs, I did manage to find some interesting CDs that I may just sell off to those of you who like them. A quick example, I have a sealed Windows 98 Disc w/ serial (never used) and a Windows NT 3.51 CD. Yeah, a nice odd mix of stuff, and I just don’t know what to do with it. E-bay? NeoBay? Send a random CD with donations to my Gift Fund? Who knows.

Anyways, I needs to get back to cleaning… feel free to comment with what you think I should do with all of these CDs. :)

Oh, on a side note… for those of you who want to comment, you don’t have to be a member of my blog to do so. Just click where it says “No Comments” (or the number of comments) , then under “Leave a Reply”, just fill out your name, e-mail addy, website (if you want, not required) and your comment. Then click “Submit”. It’s as easy as that! :D

+ Raise it up, and bring it on down By Jason 15 July 2005 at 7:04 pm 35 views No Comments

So, I got my second review done here at work, and they like me enough to give me another raise! Whooo! Very nice to hear, this will definitely help Jess and I save up for things we need (and for the wedding we keep delaying).

Speaking of Jess, she’s not doing too hot. She hates her job right now… enough that she wishes she’d get fired. What set it off? Her boss had written something for her to print out (500+ copies), and after having the printer break down twice (both different issues that required a repairman to come out, and her to start over each time), it turned out that her boss had miswrote something, so Jess had to re-print it all. Jess never really liked the job, but it pays very well so she tolerates it for the most part, just about once every month or so, something like this happens and it just crushes her. It’s very sad. I really want to tell her she can quit, but if she can stick it out till December, we should have enough saved for me to feel comfortable with her quitting.

Anyway, I feel like a jerk since I’m the one essentially telling her to stay at a job she doesn’t like. Also, I can handle much more work related stress than she can… so trying to make her feel better isn’t quite working. I hate seeing her like this… she just kinda spaces out, sleeps a lot, doesn’t really eat, etc. Of course the entire time I feel like crap, because I see it as mainly my fault… I’m officially making more than I ever have in my life, and I don’t feel very happy at all. All I can hope is that she recovers and can make it till Dec, then everything should be golden.
