Congratulations, SpaceX! 29 September 2008 at 5:40 am by Jason 243 views

SpaceX, the private company established by PayPal’s founder Elon Musk, has made history by successfully launching their Falcon 1 rocket and achieving orbit. Falcon 1 has made history as the first privately developed liquid fueled launch vehicle to achieve earth orbit! The amazing thing about this is that it was only their fourth try. While many people see that as failure, most countries take many tries to get it right.

This launch comes after the failure of the Falcon 1 (Flight 3). During Flight 3, a problem occurred just after the first separation which prevented the second stage from occurring and from reaching orbit. According to their press release, “SpaceX was aware of and had allowed for a thrust transient, but did not expect it to last that long. As it turned out, a very small increase in the time between commanding main engine shutdown and stage separation would have been enough to save the mission. The fix was also very simple, requiring one line of code to be changed.”

You can see the video of the launch here:

Congrats, again, to SpaceX!

+ It is January… right? By Jason 27 January 2006 at 9:56 am 50 views 1 Comment

I’m not 100% sure as to what is wrong with the weather, but we haven’t had snow in almost 2 months. Now, I’m not complaining… but we live up north, and it’s January! So we haven’t had any snow… and while that’s odd by itself, it’s also been warm. Very warm. Let’s take a look at the weather for Omaha today…

January Weather

62 degrees is the high, 40 is the low (click the image to see). This is mid-spring weather. I tell you… this doesn’t bode well for the rest of the year. With no snow melting, the grass will be even drier than normal this summer… that means a much higher chance for fires. Also, with the hurrican season last year being so deadly, I wonder if this abnormal winter will do anything to add to it this year?

So what do you all think… Global Warming? Or is the Earth just going through a cycle? Comment away!

+ Now you see ‘em, now you don’t… By Jason 25 July 2005 at 7:25 pm 46 views No Comments

It seems Microsoft has launched their MSN Earth Beta… but it has some kinks still in it. Remember something happening in New York on Sept 11, 2001? I do, but MSN Earth doesn’t. See here:

WTC (Ground Zero) - Google Maps:

While I’m sure they’ll have it fixed soon… they really should use a bit newer maps.
