I needed to fill my left front tire today… was a bit low (okay, it was almost completely flat :P). Since Jess needed the car after my lunch hour, I decided to bring her with me when I went to fill the tire. That’s when I discovered that filling your tires can be a danger to you! That’s right. It seems that if you leave your car running while filling your tire, you can cause the car to explode!!
How is this possible? According to Jess (who assures me that she has a PHD in Carology), if your engine creates a spark (which, as we all know, they do almost all the time when idling), it can float through the air (which is not flammable, so don’t worry) until it reaches the tire you’re inflating with the air hose. It will then ignite the air you’re filling the tire with (which is flammable) and blow up your car (and anyone inside… ouch!).
Now you know, and knowing is half the battle.
If you have any other car questions, feel free to ask and I’ll pass them on to Jess for her to answer.
