Today we remember the tragic events of September 11th, 2001.  It’s been seven years already, and yet the ringleader of the terrorists behind these attacks still roams free.  The war in Iraq still trudges forward and the hunt for Osama bin Laden is still out of the spotlight.

Hopefully whoever the next president is, be it Barack Obama, John McCain, or even a third party candidate, they will help protect this country from any further attacks and step up the hunt to bring bin Laden to justice.

It’s hard to believe it’s been seven years since that day… if you had a child the day of the attacks, they’d be entering second grade this year.  It’s amazing how time flies and how old wounds tend to take longer to heal.  In related news, they’ve finally finished the design for the WTC Memorial entrance… I really hope that the buildings are started (and completed) sometime soon.

So, as is custom, where was I, the morning of September 11th, 2001?  I was in bed and had been woken up by Jessica when it first came on the news.  I then spent the rest of the day trying to call relatives who live within a few miles of the towers.  Luckily none were injured

Where were you?

+ Apparently all purses are not created equal. By Jason 07 July 2008 at 9:05 am 4 views No Comments

I guess I’m just behind the times, or perhaps as a man I just don’t understand, but why in the world do some purses cost $150, $300, or even thousands of dollars?  To me, there doesn’t seem to be a major difference between a $150 Coach purse and a $25 Worthington Signature purse.  I can almost hear the anger at that statement, but I really don’t get it.  As a guy, if one item costs more than another similar item, in my mind, it does for one of three reasons:

  1. Performance:  The item is better than other items in its class.
  2. Luxury:  The item is made of better materials than other items in its class.
  3. Features:  The item can do more things than other items in its class

That’s it.  You see why these purses have me confused now, right?  And yes, I’ve heard that these purses are more luxurious, but I don’t see it.  Honestly… the materials are the same as other purses, the designs are very similar, and they don’t have any added features that other purses don’t seem to have.  I’ve been told it’s a “Status” thing, or that you’re paying because it’s a “Coach bag” or a “Louis Vuitton bag,” but again… I don’t get it.  Maybe someone can explain it better to me in terms I’d understand (I’m the type  of guy who has a Creative Zen because for the price it had the same quality and more/better features than the iPod).

I guess as long as people are happy to get them and it doesn’t cause any harm, there’s nothing wrong with it, but as someone who has just been introduced to these bags (Jessica is now in love with them) I just don’t get what is so awesome about them.

+ Summer storms! By Jason 04 June 2008 at 10:11 pm 398 views 1 Comment

Not a major post, but our evening has been interrupted as we’ve had some major storms rolling through here, and you can see by this radar shot (we are around where the arrow is):

Storms

Yikes, right?  Turns out there was at least one tornado (our tornado sirens were going off for a good 10 minutes or so), golf ball sized hail, and lots of lightning.  I was able to get this shot of a bolt of lighting when the storm started:

Lightning!

But after that I left all the picture taking to Jessica:

Go Jess!

Check out these beauties:

Lightning!

Lightning!

Lightning!

The girl is a natural!  Now that it’s all over, we need to get all of our plants back outside, as they’re scattered all over our living room (the cats are locked in the bedroom) and it looks like a jungle in here.  Storms kinda throw everything off!

+ Recipe: Nuclear Pineapple By Jason 10 September 2005 at 7:54 pm 101 views No Comments

This time I’m going to change it up, and instead of one of my drinks, I’m going to give you the recipe for one of Jessica’s favorite drinks. This drink is very unique, and is dubbed, the Nuclear Pineapple.

First, here’s a list of the ingredients you will need (for those who don’t know how much an oz is, it’s1/8 cup):

Nuclear Pineapple

1 handful of ice
1/2 oz Triple Sec (or Grand Mariner)
1 oz Dry Vermouth
1 oz Vodka
2 oz Pineapple-Orange juice
1/2 oz Lemon Juice
1/2 oz Midori
1 drop yellow food coloring

Okay… time to mix!

Step 1. Get out your martini shaker (we likes our drinks shaken, not stirred… like Bond, James Bond) .

Step 2. Place ice, Vodka and Dry Vermouth in the shaker, shake for about 10 seconds.

Step 3. Place the rest of the ingredents into the shaker, and shake until nice and icy (about a minute).

Step 4. Strain drink into the glass of your choice (I like a martini glass, myself) and drink and be merry!! If this turns out right, it should be a bright yellowish green color… and taste like pineapple and melon.

Remember to drink responsibly and visit often for more drink recipes!

+ Rings, Ribs, and Racists… By Jason 22 August 2005 at 9:50 am 46 views No Comments

So, I’ve had a bunch to talk about, but no time to post! Sheesh!

First and foremost, we finally got Jessica her engagement ring! It’s taken about a year to get the “perfect” ring. We found one about 4 months ago, but it seems when we were ready to get it, they pulled the entire line (I really wish I knew why that was). Anyway, after a long day of searching, we ended up at Whitehall Jewelers (where I had gotten Jess her last ring, 4 years ago… same company, different state). We looked at a few rings, didn’t see what we wanted, and were about to go, when the lady helping us told us that we could create a ring from existing jewlery in the store, and their jeweler would make it for us. So we chose to combine a necklace and a topaz ring (plus whateve the jeweler wanted) to make it. A few weeks later we got it back and it was perfect! Here’s a picture (though not the best):

We’re very happy with it, and recommend Whitehall if you’re looking for any jewelery. :DOkay, next subject! Ribs! Jess and I went to the Iowa ribfest on Saturday and had a blast! I have to tell you, if you ever have the chance to have ribs from Johnson’s BBQ (the one outside Norfolk VA) you need to eat them. They were hands down the best ribs and sauce there (and we tried all but two). No one else was even close! It’s amazing that they haven’t branched out across the country. Mmmm… ribs.

And finally, we’re on to the racists. It turns out (and this, I didn’t know) that Jess’ family is extremely racist. Luckily she’s not… but they, wow… they are. It turns out her sister is going to the dorms for college, and will have a 22 year old Muslim girl as a roommate. So what did she do? She called the school to scream at them and demand they give her another roommate (the school so far has told her “no”). She thinks that the girl could be part of a sleeper cell, she might attack her, etc, etc. She knows nothing of this woman other than she’s here on a Student Visa, and is muslim. She could be from any country, could be any race, could be the nicest girl in the world, but Jess’ sister doesn’t care. She’s muslim, she’s bad. Now, if it was just her sister, I’d be shocked, but not as upset ad I am. It seems not only her sister, but her parents (both of them) and her fiance also agree with her!! Now, her fiance is going to Iraq in a couple months, and her dad is in the Air Force…. and they agree? They should be the ones to explain the difference between muslims and terrorists to her… not agree!! Argh!! Jess had a huge talk with her mom, and she couldn’t sway her one bit. At one point they even told Jess that Muslims need to just go back where they came from!! What in the world??? *sigh* This upsets me so bad… and there’s nothing I can do about it. Grrrr!

Okay, well… that’s all from me for now, time to get back to work! :)
