Back from the Caucus 09 February 2008 at 5:05 pm by Jason 157 views

Wow, that was the craziest thing ever. The caucus was set to start at 12:00, so Jess and I arrived at 10:30 so we weren’t late. We registered early and sat down. We were told they were estimating about 800 people. Around 11:30 they probably already had over 1000 people inside and were starting to panic. Apparently traffic was backed up and there were lines out the door. At 12:00 we were told to move from the cafeteria to the main entry way as they were running out of room. At 1:00 they announced they’d be running late because they were still letting in the lines of people.

By 1:30 we were told to go into the gym, and it was instantly packed… with just 3 districts! There were still people in other areas. The current estimate is around 3000 people showed up for the caucus. As far as our districts went, we seemed about evenly split down the Clinton/Obama border (I couldn’t tell who had more supporters, seemed pretty even… not a sweep for either candidate), not really seeing that many Undecided voters.

We were finally able to cast our ballots (in a sense) and get out of there by 2:30. It was a madhouse. As we were leaving we heard other districts just starting. I’d almost assume people are still there. Even though it was a complete madhouse, I’m glad I went. I got to talk to a few fellow Hillary Clinton supporters, as well as a few Barack Obama supporters and they all were very nice and articulate on why they liked their candidate. Amazingly all said they’d support either candidate if they won, and they hoped whichever got the nomination would take the advice from the other. I was surprised at how civil it was!

Now, I didn’t bring my camera because we weren’t sure if they’d allow it, so all I have are some cell phone shots, but they get the point across that there were plenty of Clinton supporters at the Sarpy County Caucus:

Now we sit and wait for the results. The Omaha Channel is keeping track with live updates here, and I’m sure CNN will as well as the day goes on. Now it’s time for me to go back to redesigning this site! I’ve got quite a start and I can’t wait to see it in action! Until next time, folks!

UPDATE: Seems they estimated for less than 500 and had over 6000 (from KMTV News):

A sea of Nebraska Democrats packed into the gym at Papillion La Vista South High School. Organizers only expected about 500 people at this caucus site . The county chairman says 6,000 showed up.

+ Visit with Chelsea Clinton By Jason 07 February 2008 at 9:01 pm 62 views No Comments

Today while everyone was clamoring to the completely packed Obama convention here in Omaha, Jess and I heard through the grapevine that Hillary had sent Chelsea to speak on her behalf down in Lincoln. We called UNL (where she was going to be) and got all of the information. We both took half the day off and ran down to Lincoln to see what was going on.

We arrived close to 2:00 PM (when she was scheduled to speak) and the place was packed:

What a crowd!

That pic is just a corner, we were toward the center, and it got even more full as time went on. Anywho, at about 2:15 Chelsea made her appearence. She gave a little speech, then told us that she would answer any questions we had for the next hour or so. The questions ranged from Immigration Reform, to Education, to Environmental Problems. We even had an exchange student from China who asked what Hillary’s stance on Taiwan and Chinese relations were.

Chelsea Speaking

Chelsea managed to answer all of our questions (though she said that if we asked anything she didn’t know, that to just give her our e-mail address and she’d ask her mom and e-mail us the answer), although she ran out of time at the end leaving some people hanging (she did apologize and looked quite upset that she couldn’t get to everyone). After the questions she took time to meet with anyone who wanted to talk to her, get an autograph, or picture. Jess and I got a chance to meet her, I shook her hand and told her that as a New Yorker myself that I was proud of her mom and that she should be proud of her too (which she said she was). She asked if we were going to the caucus on Saturday and we told her we would be there and she told us thanks and took a picture with us:

Chelsea and Us!

I kind of wasn’t ready for the picture to be taken, so please ignore me looking so goofy. After that we took off back to Omaha (after a short stop at the Licorice Store). It was a nice time and I’m hoping there will be a decent turnout for Hillary on Saturday! I guess we’ll just have to wait and see! Until next time, folks!

+ So much to say, so little time! By Jason 10 December 2007 at 1:33 pm 174 views 1 Comment

I’ve had so little time in the past couple weeks to blog about anything, how sad! Jessica’s “winter hours” have started and she’s now working more overtime in a week than normal time (41.5 hours of overtime, just last week… crazy!). Once the wedding happens (just 2 weeks!) and Christmas is over, things should start to get back to normal. There are a few things I want to touch base on, though.

  1. The Westroads Mall shooting. First, both I and Jessica, and everyone we know are okay, even though we’re shook up about it. This was a horrible act by a messed up person, and I hope no one sees it and thinks “What a good idea, think I’ll copy it!” Just horrible.
  2. People should not open second restaurants, no matter how popular they are, if they aren’t going to try to keep the quality the same as the first. This line of thinking also goes for making movie sequels (I’m looking at you, Hollywood). Recently Jess and I went to the new Wheatfields here in Omaha, seeing as how we love the original, we thought having a closer location would be great. It wasn’t. While there we were kept waiting a good 20 min for food that required minimal cooking (a BLT and a turkey reuben), then when noticing the food wasn’t as described on the menu, I was first told to show them that it wasn’t correct (as if I had to prove it), then was told that “this is how we do it here” and then “but you know, the cooks do things differently”. What? Pick an excuse and stick with it. For a $10 sandwich, it should be made right. I’ve never had this happen at the original location, and the one time I didn’t like what I ordered (my fault, just didn’t like the taste) they insisted they buy me desert to make up for it. Now that is how to treat a customer.
  3. Speaking of treating customers, I have decided that customer service has all but died, lately. While ordering stuff for the wedding, one of our items was incorrect. When e-mailing the company, they failed to even read the first 2 e-mails, responding to our complaints with a simple “the order shipped”. When finally getting them to see our issue, they tell us that they’d expect a “$500 every other week customer” to raise this big of deal, they just don’t see why we’re so upset. This continued until I started demanding money back (and I’m sure copying my message to the president didn’t hurt). Finally over 6 e-mails and a week later, they seem to understand why we’re upset and begin to move forward. Why did it take that long? The first thing they should have said when noticing our order was incorrect was something along the lines of “What can we do to fix this problem?” I was going to name names here, but they finally shaped up, so I’ll spare them. Just in general, be nice to your customers unless they’re being a jerk to you.

That’s all I got for now… still trying to finish up my Christmas shopping and all that stuff. Since I missed it before, Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah, everyone!

+ MC Chris @ The Waiting Room w/ The Family Radio By Jason 19 October 2007 at 10:07 am 139 views No Comments

I was too wiped out by the time I got home last night to make my post, so I’m doin’ it this morning… that’s right, MC Chris rocks so rough I couldn’t blog.

So, the concert was scheduled to start at 9:00 PM, but we didn’t get started until 10:00 PM (the rumor floating around was that they had other bands that were supposed to play, but they didn’t show… I don’t know if it’s true, but it’s a good rumor). First up we had local Omaha boys “The Family Radio“… they were bad ass! First of all, their goal was to beat Final Fantasy VII before the end of their set… they didn’t accomplish their goal, but they were able to beat Jenova, and as they were cleaning up their set and getting ready for MC Chris they did manage to defeat Sephiroth. As far as their music goes, it was highly energetic and was just great… if they put their mind to it they could really go places (although they did say this was their last concert for a long time, so who knows what will happen). Check out some of the shots I took below.

This is how you know a show is gonna rock:

Squaresoft!
Final Fantasy!!
Sephi Sephi Sephiroth!

Now for the band:

The Family Radio

So after we were primed by the Family’s block rockin’ beats, it was time for our main course… oh FUCK, it’s goddamn MC Chris!

Oh fuck!

Unfortunately the MC is still recovering from his Hard Drive accidents and didn’t have all of his music loaded up on his Laptop, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t the best show ever! He opened with a great mix of the Mortal Combat theme and the Tiny Toons theme song (once you get it in your head, you can’t get it out) and followed up with most of his popular songs (Geek, Fette’s Vette, FTW, I Want Candy, etc). The audience participation was great… we learned some great moves such as “rap hands” and were ordered to do the robot and throw up gang signs, can’t beat that! Here’s a couple shots of the MC doin’ his thang:

Excellent! After his set he came down to the audience to shake hands and sign whatever we wanted. I got one of his last copies of Dungeon Master of Ceremonies (all sold out forevers now) and had him sign it. I also got a great shot with him… yeah, we be badass rebels, yo:

MC Chris + Me!

He promised he’d be back in the spring, so I look forward to that. Now I need to rest, because I’m running on just a few hours of sleep and am still sick… ugh! Peace out!

+ Wedding plans By Jason 05 September 2007 at 7:04 am 168 views 1 Comment

So, it turns out weddings are pretty hard to plan when you give yourself a <$5000 budget and only 3.5 months deadline. Who’d have guessed? Jess and I finally set a date (Dec. 24th) and we’ve been spending almost every waking moment working towards getting everything ready. So far we’ve gotten:

Our Photographer: Dulce Productions (a great wedding photographer from Omaha)
Our rings: Whitehall Jewellers (both custom designed)
Her bouquet: David M. Mangelsen’s (another local Omaha company)
Her dress: Surburban Bridals (the perfect dress after days of searching)
Our location: A nice private Bed & Breakfast (a wonderful place and owner)
Our officiant: District Court Judge Joseph Troia (such a nice guy over the phone!)

Not bad, huh? There’s still plenty to do, but that is a lot of the major stuff out of the way! :) I tell you, I don’t know how people plan weddings bigger than this without any help… it’s pretty insane as it is!
