Microsoft Seadragon & Liquid Resize 28 March 2008 at 1:16 pm by 2,070 views

First off, I know this is a bit old, but amazingly I missed the boat the first time this was displayed. Microsoft Seadragon is one of the coolest new technologies that some of you have never heard of. First, this is what Microsoft’s Official Seadragon page has to say about it:

Seadragon is an incubation project resulting from the acquisition of Seadragon Software in February. Its aim is nothing less than to change the way we use screens, from wall-sized displays to mobile devices, so that visual information can be smoothly browsed regardless of the amount of data involved or the bandwidth of the network.

They follow that up by telling you that it is pretty vague, but they ask you to “consider the following four ‘promises’ of Seadragon:”

1. Speed of navigation is independent of the size or number of objects.
2. Performance depends only on the ratio of bandwidth to pixels on the screen.
3. Transitions are smooth as butter.
4. Scaling is near perfect and rapid for screens of any resolution.

The Seadragon team is currently tuning its DirectX implementation, making the most of the new Windows Media Photo format, and cranking on the Photosynth Technology Preview.

Now, I’ll be the first to tell you that Photosynth impresses the hell out of me (click here to see a video of it in action), but what Seadragon is capable of excites me a bit more. So, what in the world is Microsoft Seadragon? Well, why don’t you take a look at this video. In a nutshell, Seadragon will allow you to view data and pictures in such a way that you’re only limited to the size of the display… you really need to see the video to get a grasp of what it can do!

Speaking of amazing things you can do with images… have any of you heard of Content-Aware Image Resizing? Once perfected it’ll be a great tool that you can use to resize pictures without having to crop or majorly distort them. From onOne Software’s press release:

Liquid Resize, a “content aware” image resizing application, was originally developed by the Vienna, Austria based husband-wife team of Ramin Sabet and Irmgard Sabet-Wasinger and is based on the work of Shai Avidan and Ariel Shamir that made its first appearance in a video released at Siggraph 2007.

Liquid Resize will allow users to resize an image without the traditional geometric limitations while minimizing any distortion that would typically result from changing the original aspect ratio of an image.

This is another “see it to beleive it” things, so please watch the video demo here. That is something that, as a photographer, I’d really love to see made public! They claim to have a Beta out soon, but it’s already 2 months overdue so I won’t be holding my breath.  If any more news breaks about any of these incredible new applications, expect to read about it right here!

+ New Site Dev! By 10 February 2008 at 9:49 am 295 views No Comments

Alright! I’m finally getting somewhere on the new site design! Nothing against this design, but I’ve had it for over a year now and it bores me. Well, to be honest I think it looks a bit unprofessional. Such a silly thought, I’m sure, but it’s what I think every time I look at it. Now then, onto the good stuff!

So, here’s what you currently see:

Before

Not horrible, but not great, either. Now, here’s what I’m thinking the site will look like:

After

Pretty sweet, huh? Now I’m sure there will be more changes between this and the final product, but at least I’m getting somewhere. I think that this will make me happy. Also, I’ll be changing (and using) the photo gallery as well as finally having a real home page of sorts. :) Hurrah! Now I just have to stick with it between the 100 other things I have to do.

+ R.I.P. Levi the Lobster By 28 September 2007 at 7:08 am 1,786 views 1 Comment

I’m sure most of you remember Levi… he was my pet Blue Crayfish that I got for my birthday back in 2005. In fact, the very first post in my blog on this domain (after the AutoPatcher blog) involved Levi. He lived a pretty good life, he was almost three years old, which from what I can tell online, is the average lifespan for a crayfish like him. It’s really sad that he’s gone… I dunno if we’re going to get another, or if we’re going to wait a while. The first pic below was taken the day we got him… you’ll not he’s about the size of the gravel. In the second pic it was his full-grown size… note how big he is compared to the same gravel. He grew a lot while we had him, and if anyone out there is thinking of a Blue Lobster as a pet, I’d suggest you get one young so you can watch him grow up!

Levi's first pic!

All grown up!

You can see a bunch more of his pics here in my photo gallery… he will be missed, such an interesting creature. :( For those wondering, he died from what appeared to be old age. Over the past 3 months he has slowed down… not moving around as much and 2 days ago he kind of went and layed in a corner of the tank. He was still alive yesterday, he moved his claws at me when I tapped him, but today he was still… I figure as far as deaths go, it was a pretty peaceful one.

+ On the side By 12 March 2007 at 7:05 am 574 views No Comments

I’ve been busy this last week helping out a friend of mine in the photography business. John needed some help with his company’s website and I hadn’t ever worked on a photo site before, so I was all for it. The site is still a work in progress, but I think it should be done quite soon (just need to get a few more things from his host and we should be good to go). Check it out:

Dulce Productions, Inc.

Not bad, huh? I figure while I’m at it I’ll give him a plug or two. Dulce Productions is an Omaha based company specializing in all types of photography from weddings to nature shots. Now, most of you know I’m an amature photographer myself and his stuff blows mine away (I’m gettin’ there, though!). So, if you’re in need of a good photographer and live in the Midwest (he’s not shy about travel) go ahead and shoot him a message. :)

Okay… enough of the shameless plugging. I need to get back to work!

+ Does it feel windy to you? By 03 April 2006 at 2:37 pm 677 views No Comments

First post of mine in awhile, as I’ve been busy… but, I’ve had at least one bit of good news.

Know what this is?

OMG! Tornado!

It’s a tornado… and where you see it touching down, is only about 1.5 miles from my house. In fact, most of the damage took place on the street that runs by our home. This storm was pretty bad (happened a few days ago, just finally found the pic I wanted)… it ripped the roof off of a church, among other things. Here are some more storm photos… thank goodness no one was hurt!
