I’ve voted, have you? 28 October 2008 at 9:04 am by Jason 1,055 views

With only one week to go until the US Elections, it seems that at least 75% of you out there (if you’re voting) are planning to wait until November 4th.  My question is, “Why?”  If your State supports early voting, you really should go and get it over with.  We all know that most people are procrastinators, and when it comes to voting a lot of people think that their vote doesn’t count.  Well, just remember, your vote always counts if you use it… the way a lot of people “win” their elections is by hoping their opponents supports don’t vote.

As far as the election itself, it is currently assumed that with his stable 5 point lead Obama is untouchable and will be our next President, but history shows that’s not always the way it goes.  Just look at the Gallup poll of Nixon vs Humphrey:

In 1968, the race between Richard Nixon and Hubert Humphrey narrowed over the last month of the campaign, from double-digit leads for Nixon in late September to only an 8-point lead for him among registered voters in polling conducted Oct. 17-22. By Gallup’s final pre-election survey, conducted Oct. 29-Nov. 2, Nixon held only a 1-point edge among likely voters, and ultimately won the election on Nov. 5 by less than 1 percentage point, 43.4% to 42.7%.

As you can see, Nixon just barely won, even though Humphrey was way behind until the very end.  Actually, in the past, the polls have never been that accurate, as you can see in this chart:

The polls showed higher numbers 9 times outof the past 14 elections… in fact, when polling higher, it averaged 6.59 points higher.  When polling lower, it averaged 3.2 points lower.  So, what does that all mean for Barack Obama?  It means that his supporters shouldn’t just assume that he has it made since he’s polling 5 points higher… for John McCain, it means his supporters need to get out en masse and try to win this thing.  It’s been reported that in California, a State where Obama is polled at +18, when it comes to over 210,000 early voters, he’s ahead by only 1000 votes (just +0.5), so yeah, your vote does count.

To sum this entire post up:

GO VOTE.  DON’T WAIT.  YOUR DEADLINE IS 7 DAYS AWAY.

+ Why do we accept politics the way it is? By Jason 02 September 2008 at 1:35 pm 578 views 2 Comments

Lately, with all the constant talk of controversies with the current crop of White House hopefulls, I was thinking… why do we, as Americans, stand for this kind of garbage?  “Obama is a secret Muslim,” “Sarah Palin didn’t have her last child,” and so on.  This type of thing is just crazy.  Is Obama running for “President of the Christians”?  Is Palin trying to achieve the post of “VP of Five Children”?  No?  Then what does any of it matter?

These types of stories are usually seen in the gossip mags at the supermarket checkout line, not spouted out over CNN.  People act like these are the big stories.  “Didja hear?  Sarah Palin’s husband had a DWI back in 1984!”  So?  What are her feelings on the conflict in South Ossetia?  “The news just said that Obama’s house cost $1.65 million!”  Okay… did the news say what his plan is to help fix our runaway national debt?

Why is it that it seems most of us Americans don’t choose the leader of our country based upon their track record or what they stand for, but rather, by their feelings?  If your company allowed you to “vote” on your next company president, would you be asking hard hitting questions like “has he/she ever cheated on their spouse” or would you ask things like “would they clamp down on useless company spending?”  It’s amazing to me that the key issues seem to play little role in politics, and whenever they come up, people usually accept answers that usually make little sense (example: “I plan to cut taxes and at the same time I’m going to start all these new projects!”).

I know this isn’t a long (or in depth) post, just something I’m a little fed up with.  When I’m online or around the office, I didn’t hear discussions about Obama not wanting to fund NASA or McCain seeking to add Amendments to the Constitution.  No, I hear about Obama not wearing a lapel pin, or that it was rumored that McCain had an affair with a lobbyist.  It’s just ridiculous to me that these are the “issues” that the average person cares about.

You know, both parties and almost all candidates this year preached that they’re bringing some kind of change, but to be honest, I don’t see it anywhere.

+ Obama/Bayh ‘08? By Jason 22 August 2008 at 6:39 pm 434 views 1 Comment

Just saw this hit the net (from KMBC):

LENEXA, Kan. — After weeks of speculation and days of intense rumors, the answer to who Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama would name as his running mate may have come down to a bumper sticker printed in Lenexa.

KMBC’s Micheal Mahoney reported that the company, which specializes in political literature, has been printing Obama-Bayh material. That’s Bayh as in U.S. Sen. Evan Bayh of Indiana. Word leaked out about the material as it was being printed up by Gill Studios of Lenexa. The Obama campaign had said it would make the announcement by text message on Friday.

Gill Studios would not confirm information about the material. They would not deny it either.

“We’re very disappointed that you would spread this rumor,” Gill Studios President Tom Carrico said.

“You didn’t print it here?” Mahoney asked.

“I didn’t say that. But I’m very disappointed that you would come out and interview us and ask for confirmation and we said we would not confirm,” Carrico said.

“Or deny,” Mahoney said.

“That’s correct,” Carrico said.

Mahoney reported that at least three sources close to the plant’s operations reported the Obama-Bayh material was being produced.

Bayh has a reputation as a fiscally conservative Democrat. Bayh endorsed Hillary Clinton and it is believed that he could help the Obama ticket by delivering a key battleground state.

Obama has arranged a joint appearance for Saturday with his running mate at the state Capitol in Springfield, Ill.

Interesting stuff… if this is true heads could roll, as it kinda blows the wind out of Obama’s sails when it comes to the “big reveal,” but if it’s false, that makes you wonder why it was done. Interesting, as it notes in the article, Bayh was a huge Clinton supporter.  I wonder (if this is true) that it could be part of trying to bring the party back together.  Here’s a shot of the sticker itself:

+ Bad song choice! By Jason 06 June 2008 at 1:30 pm 345 views No Comments

The Ramones famously sang “Hey Ho, Lets Go” many years ago and many people instantly recognize the beat as soon as it hits the radio.  Sadly, this is a poor song choice when it comes to refering to certian topics (especially if you wanna get clever).

Howard Kurtz, a Washington Post Staff Writer recently wrote a column about Hillary leaving the race for President… the issue?  The title of the article:

Hey, Ho, Please Don’t Go

Here’s a screenshot incase they “fix” it:

Hey Ho, let's not!

For those not “hip” on the lingo… from Bartelby:

Definition: Ho.

Hmmm… yeah, that’s not a good thing.  Let this be a lesson to you writers out there… pay attention to what you’re saying before you let it out into the world.

UPDATE – Looks like they caught it:

Hey Ho, fixed!

Nice catch, guys!  Took a bit of time, though… 5 and a half hours, tsk tsk.

+ Boston, why do you hate the Moon? By Jason 10 February 2007 at 10:15 am 152 views No Comments

A follow-up to this article:

Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Number 1 in the Hood, G…

It now seems that after shelling out $2,000,000 to the city of Boston, the president of Cartoon Network is submitting his resignation over this marketing stunt gone bad.

The head of Cartoon Network resigned Friday after the network’s guerilla marketing scheme for one of its shows went bad last week and led to a bomb scare in Boston – a fiasco that cost its parent company $2 million.

In a letter to employees, Jim Samples, the general manager and executive vice president of the network, wrote: “I deeply regret the negative publicity and expense caused to our company as a result of this campaign. As general manager of Cartoon Network, I feel compelled to step down, effective immediately, in recognition of the gravity of the situation that occurred under my watch.”

Samples had been with Atlanta-based Cartoon Network for 13 years.

Cartoon Network boss quits over bomb scare @ Cnn.com

Can you believe this guy has to step down after a career of 13 years? A career that saw Cartoon Network and Adult Swim become forces to reckon with… it’s amazing.

Good luck, and Godspeed Mr. Samples… the sane people of the world are behind you.
