Good news all around! 31 May 2008 at 9:49 am by Jason 237 views

This isn’t going to be a huge post, but I have some good news (hooray!)…

First: All tests have finally come back and everything shows me as being cancer-free, so I can finally go back on my medicine! Today is my third day back on, and while I don’t feel that much better, I know that in the coming weeks I’ll go back to being normal! Such a relief… who’d think such a little pill was so important?

Second: They have finally fixed our roof! That’s right! No more drips, no more leaks! They’ve also begun patching the ceiling up as well:

Roof Fixed!

It only took a couple years, but at least that is finally fixed! Whoo-hoo, indeed!

Third: I has a pepper… I has a pepper! My pepper plant has started fruiting! Take a look:

Baby Pepper!

I’ll have a post later showing my garden, as for the most part all the plants have taken off. For those wanting to know, yes, you can transplant from an AeroGarden to normal soil quite well (again, I’ll save that for another post).

Fourth: Happy Birthday, Dad! Today marks the 25th Anniversary of your 21st Birthday! I hope you get what you want (although I already know about your new motorcycle, so you’re probably all good).

Okay… that’s all I got for today… I’m going to attempt to get Jessica tickets to the New Kids on the Block concert (what is this, 1988?) as they go on sale for the Omaha show in about 10 minutes. Man… people need to stop touring. I need a break! ha!

+ When we said “Rock the Vote,” we didn’t mean it like that. By Jason 03 April 2008 at 4:35 pm 185 views 2 Comments

Welcome to the 2008 elections! This new generation doesn’t vote their conscience. This generation doesn’t weigh the facts, then vote with intelligence. Hell, we don’t even vote what we’re feeling in our guts or hearts. What do we do? We vote for the “cool guy” that gives us concert tickets… just ask Jason Schechtman:

It was an unexpected showdown of surrogates for Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton here Wednesday, and it sure looked like Obama’s representative whipped up the most excitement.

As former President Bill Clinton was extolling his wife’s credentials, Obama’s campaign office in Bloomington began giving away tickets to Sunday’s Dave Matthews concert at Assembly Hall.

Jason Schechtman, 19, Deerfield, Ill., a student at IU, got his tickets about 8 p.m. after waiting more than three hours. He met folks in line who said they’d left the Clinton rally to wait for tickets.

“I was leaning toward Obama, but this sealed the deal for sure,” he said. “The Obama campaign announced this right as (Bill Clinton) was about to speak, and it brought everyone from over there to over here.”

Still, Clinton persevered. He told Indiana University students they should choose his wife for president not because she’s a historic candidate but because the country’s future is better off in her hands.

That’s right, giving away free tickets sealed the deal for his vote. Why should that even matter? I’m trying to work this out in my head. So he was leaning towards Obama, but not committed… so he had doubts. Now he has concert tickets… and the doubts are all gone? Does this make sense to anyone or has the world gone crazy?!

Don’t misunderstand me, I’m not upset he’s voting for Obama, but I’m upset at the reason. I’d be equally upset if someone said the reason they were voting for Clinton because she’s putting on an Elton John show. Votes Matter. They do. Choosing the leader of your country should really be given more thought than just who gives you the most stuff. It’s horribly irritating!

EDIT - Publia at Wilmette brings up a good point about this:

Of couse, there’s a bit of a problem here–Obama’s campaign might be viewed by some as inducing a person to vote for a candidate by giving them the ticket, a Class D Felony. But who will complain? The people accepting the free tickets, might be commiting a felony themselves.

IC 3-14-3-19
Inducing votes by gift or offer to compensate
Sec. 19. A person who, for the purpose of inducing or procuring another person to:
(1) apply for or cast an absentee ballot; or
(2) vote or refrain from voting for or against a candidate or for or against a public question at an election or political convention; gives, offers, or promises to any person any money or other property commits a Class D felony.

IC 3-14-3-20
Acceptance or solicitation of compensation to induce or procure votes
Sec. 20. A person who, for the purpose of inducing or procuring
a voter to:
(1) apply for or cast an absentee ballot; or
(2) vote or refrain from voting for or against a candidate or for or against a public question at an election or political convention; receives, accepts, requests, or solicits from any person any money or other property commits a Class D felony.

Interesting… I wonder if anyone will call them on it?

+ Cirque du Soleil for you and me! By Jason 02 April 2008 at 6:21 pm 118 views No Comments

Being in the right place at the right time worked out for me today as I’m the proud owner of these bad boys:

Cirque du Soleil Tickets

That’s right, tickets to the sold out Cirque du Soleil show, Saltimbanco, here in Omaha!  How awesome is that?!  Now we’ve never been to one of their shows, but Jessica wanted to go see them when she first heard about them coming to town, but the tickets are a bit pricy and have a habit of selling out immediately.  Sadly they don’t allow cameras, so I may walk away without any pictures.  I’m gonna give it a shot using my cell phone, but you know how bad those usually turn out.

So, what is this Saltimbanco thing, anyway?  Well, their website has this to say:

Saltimbanco -from the Italian “saltare in banco”, which literally means “to jump on a bench”-explores the urban experience in all its myriad forms: the people who live there, their idiosyncrasies and likenesses, families and groups, the hustle and bustle of the street and the towering heights of skyscrapers. Between whirlwind and lull, prowess and poetry, Saltimbanco takes spectators on an allegorical and acrobatic journey into the heart of the city.

Saltimbanco is a Cirque du Soleil signature show inspired by the urban fabric of the metropolis and its colorful inhabitants. Decidedly baroque in its visual vocabulary, the show’s eclectic cast of characters draws spectators into a fanciful, dreamlike world, an imaginary city where diversity is a cause for hope.

Hmmm… that doesn’t help me too much, but as long as Jess is happy, I’m happy!  Variety has a decent review of the show, as do plenty of other blogs, so I may end up really enjoying this!

Saltimbanco

Expect my thoughts about the show either late tomorrow (as it’s an evening show) or Friday!
